    Thoughts on "semi" departmentalizing?

I teach 5th grade at an Intermediate School. There are 9 teachers...we each begin our day with our homeroom students and then our students switch for 2 subject areas. They come back to us for lunch/recess and stay with us for the remainder of their day. All teachers teach Language Arts to their homerooms.

What are other schools doing regarding departmentalization, particularly those of you at an Intermediate School? Do you not do it at all? Meaning you keep your kids all day?

Anyone have any research that might support or not support departmentalizing at this level?

As a bit of background, we have been told that "best practices" say that we should become more of an elementary model, and not change classes at all - Administration says that they have lots of data to back it up. I was wondering if anyone had been through this, and what your thoughts and opinions might be.......and if you have any research to show either side of the argument? Thanks so much!
