    Santa

    I duck the question as best I can with my third graders, but when confronted directly about whether I believe in Santa, I say yes--I guess it's a little dishonest, but it's not my place to burst any bubbles, and I do believe in the spirit of generosity and giving that Santa represents.

    Every year I have my students go to northpole.com and fill in the letter to Santa form, get their response from "Bif, the mailroom elf", and then two days later log back in to get their letters from Santa. No one has ever refused to write a letter because they didn't believe. I think they are just hedging their bets!

    One year I had used my email address on the site and the following year received an email telling about the updates to the site. I wasn't thinking, and said to the kids, "I have email from Santa!" You should have seen their faces!!! I don't think one kid questioned me about him that year.
