Cactus Hotel is a great book to use. Along that line, have you done the paper towel, waxed paper experiment to show how a cactus retains moisture? I also just read an idea in a magazine for making a paper mache saguaro cactus over a chicken wire frame, painting it green, and sticking toothpicks in it for spines. Shoebox dioramas of typical plant and animal life in the desert make a nice project too! My grade partner always plants a desert terrarium w/ various small cactuses from Walmart in a fish tank for her unit. I look forward to what others have to add so I can beef up my desert unit this year!
