After my husband and I got married I had one year left of college...all student teaching. I subbed for 6 months after that. The next fall we moved to a different state so my husband could get his graduate degree. We knew that I would be the only one working and that we would only live there for two years so I opted NOT to sub or seek a teaching job.

Once the two years were up we moved to yet another state for his new job. I subbed for 6 years. I did EVERYTHING.....and I mean EVERY grunt job that I was asked to do so that the principals would take notice. Well in the mean time I had a baby....continued subbing....even interviewed at least 12-15 times in the area for jobs. NOTHING!!!!

I got pregnant with baby number two. It was now fall and I was mentally preparing to sub again. The two biggest districts in my area were switching to "Math Their Way" so there was a class being offered for $400.00. I was determined to take that class so I could put it on my resume. My husband and I had a NASTY fight about spending that kind of money for 'nothing'. Anyway...I won and I took the class. Yes, I was the ONLY one there without a job.

Well the class ended on a Friday and by Sunday I was feeling pretty down. We went to church and I remember having a private conversation with God (which I've never done before mind you) it went something like this

"Dear God, I GIVE UP!!! I have tried and tried and tried to get a teaching job. Maybe I'm not supposed to be a teacher?! Maybe I'm just supposed to stay home right now and be a mom. That would be great too. But I need your help.....please let me know if I should keep trying this teaching 'thing'. Should I keep going or just give it up? I'm leaving it in your hands!!"

I did cry a bit too....my wonderful husband hugged me then we went home. No even 30 minutes later I got a call from the personnel director from one of the nearby districts. A long-term sub just quit on Friday. A teacher who was in the "Math Their Way" class happened to be in his office when he found out. He was beside himself wondering what to do because school started on MONDAY!!!! She remembered that I was the only one in the class that didn't have a job and really wanted one. She suggested he call me AND HE DID!!!

I had to find daycare for my daughter that very day and report to the school by 7:30 a.m. the next day. Even my principal didn't know I was hired until I showed up that morning.

Anyway...this is long but the point is...MY PRAYER WAS ANSWERED!! I finally realized that I couldn't make this dream happen on my own. It took me 8 long years to get my first permanent job. Now here I am 10 years later...in the same job....same school and I LOVE IT!!

Now that I can look back and smile....I realize that all of the experiences I had in those 8 long years of waiting to get hired, well they made me who I am today. I gathered so many great and not-so-great ideas along the way. Just hang in there and HAVE FAITH!!!! If it is meant to be it WILL happen!

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU SEARCHING FOR A JOB. I know how frustrating it is!!
