http://www.smbsd.org/page.cfm?p=898 has a LOT of first grade stuff... including already made vocab cards for every story I have used the Santa Maria Bonita website and printed off the vocabulary word with the corresponding picture. At the beginning of the school year, I have the students matching the vocabulary word/picture card to its definition in a pocket chart at a station. As the school year progresses the students fill out a Frayer Model by writing a vocabulary word in the box in the middle of the page, writing the definition in the top left, vocaulary word in a sentence in the top right, an example in the bottom left, and non-example in bottom right. Towards the end of the school year, I draw a line on the board for each letter in the vocabulary word. I start filling in the letters as the students try to guess the word. The students have to think about what they have learned about letter combinations to guess the word before it is completely filled in. Then I have a student make a prediction of what he/she thinks the word means just by hearing it. Next we find the word in the glossary and a student reads the definition aloud. Finally, I have another student use the word in a 7-upper sentence. (A sentence with 7 words or more.) Here is a link to a most wonderful site for first grade HM teachers. It has activities by each theme, and they are so helpful. You'll wonder what you ever did without it! It is all free and done by a super teacher here in Anchorage, Alaska. http://web.mac.com/deannafossler/Mrs...ring_Page.html
