When my principal wanders into the classroom, it is to do what I call his "rounds." He just wants to see how the kids are doing, to show that he cares and is interested in their work. I usually greet him when he comes in by saying, "Good Morning, Mr. Jackson!" I am modeling the type of behavior that I would like my students to exhibit. They also say "hello" when he comes in. When visitors come into the room for any reason, I do introduce them. I have had several people from our district office come into my classroom whom I was sure they wouldn't know. I allowed them to come to the front of the room, then I introduced them and told them a little bit about them. Earlier this year, I was formally observed by a person from outside of our school. When she sat down at the back of the room, I told the kids that she was there that day to see how they were doing with their math. (They didn't need to hear the rest of the story!)
