    Brainstorming is first. What are you going to write about and who is your audience.

    Graphic organizer. It can be any type. I use different types for different papers, usually a "Thinking map".

    Highlight useful parts of the graphic organizer. Take the ideas generated in the graphic organizer and highlight the parts that will be included in the paper.

    Outline. Prepare an outline for the paper. This is the critical step that kids seem to forget or haven't been taught. Most kids brainstorm and circle ideas to use, but then they just start writing a paper that is either overly structured or just a pile of ideas that are never developed. Outline is the key to better writing.
