I teach Language Arts, but the science teachers at our school all do groups with variations on one of two themes. Theme one: start with school mascot and go for variations. We are the bears, so one teacher had polar, spectacled, grizzly, etc. The other theme seems to be content oriented. A Life science teacher used the Linean (sp?) classifications and had each class draw for a kingdom. The groups in the classes got five different orders within their kingdom. Earth and Space science teachers used planets, chemical and physical science teachers used vocab terms like velocity, acceleration, etc.
