    clean desks

I teach 4th and some kids seem very naturally organized while the desks of others look like an F5 tornado has gone through! I praise those who keep their desks neat and I try VERY HARD to model a neat desk myself. It always isn't, but they do see me clean and organize. We clean the top of our desks weekly with Clorox wipes and once a month I set the timer and we clean out the inside.

I've had desks that were soooo bad that I literally took a photo of the inside of the student desk (papers hanging out, etc.), printed it, then stapled it to the student agenda with student signature and a note saying "_______'s desk as of (insert date)." That gets a LOT of response from some parents who have no idea their child is a slob at school. :) The kids know at the beginning of the year that their desk is subject to a photo shoot at any time, but there are always several who just never have a neat desk unless forced.
