After eveyone gets there we go to the carpet area where I do introductions as far as I say, Hi Johnny, and he replies, Hi Mrs. B... Then, I like to tell them the schedule for the day, which I go over again after lunch. I teach them my quiet signal, behavior chart, class rules, bathroom signal, etc. And we practice, practice, practice. Then we take a tour of the bathrooms. We we get back I read them a first day of school book, like "If you Take a Mouse to School" or First day Jitters, etc. If there is time before recess, we do calendar, weather, and some counting. After recess, I read another first day of school book. And, then I have them draw a self-portrait and write at least one sentence underneath. While they are doing that I call them over one at a time to take a picture of them. Then, we work on phonics as a whole class. By then, it is lunch time. The day goes by quickly. However, unless they had all day kindergarten, they are ready for lunch at recess time and ready to go home at lunch time. Make sure they don't eat all of their lunch at the morning snack/recess. After lunch I read another first day book. This year we read Chrysanthemum after lunch and then I wrote out their names on a sentence strip and we counted how many letters were in their name. We looked at who had the longest, shortest, etc. At the end of the day, I like to play, "Who took the cookies from the cookie Jar" and then it's time to go home. It is a pretty relaxed day with just a lot of practicing the expected behaviors. How to transition from carpet to desks, etc. So, you need to know what your routines and expectations are before hand so that you start out right.
