    marshmallow 3-d shapes

We use an AIMS worksheet that has children build plane and solid figures by connecting marshmallows (I like to also use gumdrops) with toothpicks. We discuss that where the toothpicks meet are the vertices, the toothpicks are the line segments and that as we create solid figures (pryamids, rectangular prisms, cubes) the toothpicks become the edges and the flat surfaces become the faces.

I don't advocate using food for exploration (finger painting with pudding) because of hunger in our world but I do reuse the marshmallows and gumdrops over and over every year. I also have parents send any leftover gumdrops from Easter or Christmas that have become stale.
