I love this thread, because as a student teacher myself - I find it so difficult to adjust to the whole "teachers have to do a million things at one time" thing. One thing that I've started doing going to school and writing a list of the materials I'll need for my lessons on a post it. It's easy to forget the one little thing you need for your lesson and before you know it, you've wasted five minutes trying to figure out where the heck it is. I've found that one little thing can turn into a whole lot of wasted time.

Being consistent with your language is also another important aspect of teaching that was never covered in college classes. Making sure that the language you use is very clear and consistent ensures that you are setting students up for success. Although for us teachers it might sound like we're a broken record, it really helps our students grow past the words and focus on what is being taught and what they are expected to do. If I'm teaching a new skill or strategy, I try to think about what words I'm going to use and if it feels natural to use those words every day. I'd really suggest reading Choice Words by Peter Johnston. Sometimes we can be so unaware that our words have so much more meaning for children. Our words are our tools and they can be used for bad as much as they can be used for good.

Let us know if you discover any other ways to make multi-tasking become a little more natural!
