This is an excellent book to use with whole class reading instruction. In fact, I used this book in the spring and did an entire thematic baseball unit. We created a "baseball scrapbook:" (large manila or white construction paper folded in half) cover - students fill out a baseball card about themselves (draw a self portrait, name, eye color, left/right handed, height, birthday, etc.) and glue to cover; inside - baseball/softball similes, baseball acrostic, journal response questions & answers, class favorite baseball team data collection & graph, and some other acivities; back cover - baseball diamante poem. I found many of the baseball related activities on abcteach.com. At scool I have my journal response questions; I'll try to post those later.
To peak your students interest, see if you can arrange some of your local high school baseball and softball players to meet your class and talk about the rules of the game, etc.
