I just did an activity with my first graders that demonstrates how bats' echolocation works. It's similar to the old game "Marco, Polo" that we used to play in the swimming pool. Have the students stand in a circle. Choose one "bat" and one "insect." The bat must close his/her eyes and say "echo" and then the insect responds by saying "location." The "bat" must try to locate the "insect" based on the sound of his/her voice giving away the location. The "insect" can move around to try to escape the "bat." Every time the "bat" says "echo" the "insect" must respond with "location." I think even 5/6th graders will have fun with this activity!
