I'm an ESL teacher in Texas... I teach further north of Houston. Where I teach, there is a large majority of hispanics, but there are other ethnicities thrown into the mix as well. I know some spanish (enough the be dangerous)... but the whole point of ESL is to teach english to these students. I've taught 1st and 2nd, and most of my kids were not what you would call emergent. They know quite a bit of english! I have environmental print all around the room which helps - such as labeling things around the room they might not know the english word for. Speaking spanish as an ESL teacher is actually slightly discouraged, because you don't want them to crutch on you. You want to scaffold them! :) Don't worry about not knowing Spanish, it will NOT hurt you in the ESL field! Also, something to think about is job security. As an ESL teacher, I get "seniority" over a regular ed teacher w/o ESL certification with the same teaching experience as me. Just something to throw out there! :) ESL teachers are wanted more and more by the day, and honestly I know several people I graduated with who have gone back to get theirs because their schools are requiring that they have it whether they teach ESL or not. Hope that helps!!
