Play whole class vs. teacher or in groups of three. One person needs to be the fact giver (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). Then there are two people racing to give the answer to the fact. One person uses the calculator; the other only his/her mind. Students find their mind works much faster than a calculator! Very fun to play whole class or in triads. Smackdown: Write a list of answers to addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems on a whiteboard or overhead projector. Put students into two teams. Have a student from each team go up w/ a "flyswatter". Say a problem, and students must "smack" the correct answer w/ the "flyswatter". Winning team gets a point. Fun game...can be used in a variety of subject areas. Card Games: Any card games...multiplication (addition, or subtraction) war is great. This can be played in partners. Split deck into equal parts. On the count of 3, each student turns over a card. The child who can add, subtract, or multiply the two numbers correctly first wins the hand. The child w/ the most cards at the end of the game wins. Like the game "Buzz". Never heard of that one...will try that this year! Thanks for the great ideas!
