"I don't get it..."

After "I don't get number 4" gets a response of "are you serious, your paper goes from number 3 to number 5??", my student quickly "get" that they need to say "I don't understand number 4.." which then elicits the response "what do you not understand..." and from that point the questioning leads to "do you know understand HOW to work it? WHAT they are asking you to do?.. what exactly do you not understand..."
It takes some going through.. but eventually they learn IF they can do it, it's easier to just work it out on their own than deal with me questioning them about what they don't understand.. or they learn to specifically ask about what they don't understand.
