Whisper phones

We have silent reading of self selected books each day (45 min). I encourage (strongly) my weaker readers to use their whisper phones so they can hear themselves while they read. My son made a whole set so everyone has one - he added colored electrical tape so they look 'cool'. My kiddos like that Matt made them - he's a high school senior and a frequent volunteer for science labs.
I also let them use them for the AR tests - has raised the scores on my weakest readers. These guys can be easily intimidated by these computer type tests.
