    all depends

I have taught in both public and private schols and Christmas gifts have never been one of the factors on my job fullfillment list.

All of my schools have been in the inner city so the gifts have not always been plentiful or expensive. One of my private schools did have parents who had money and I did get some nice gifts those years.

This year (public school) I got 2 gifts both of which were very nice. But I felt bad because many of the children came up to me and said they "forgot" their present or wished that they could have brought one. That just makes me sad and I assure them they give me gifts every day with their thoughtfulness and effort in class.

I have a friend who teaches in a wealthy suburban district and yes, she has to open her gifts at home, too and it takes her a good length of time. She gets many nice and generous gifts.

But is that why either of us teach where we do??? I hope not.
