You absolutely cannot run regular transparencies through your printer. After a frustrating weekend last weekend, I ended up buying the correct ones just hours before my presentation to the parents at orientation. Here is the breakdown of types:
1. regular write-on (the type you'd use and re-use on your overhead)
2. b/w copier transparancies
3. ink jet printer transparancies-they actually dry fast!
4. laser printer transparancies
