Madlibs, like PoohBear said. Just including fun facts in sentences about yourself, silly sentences about the students or the school, or writing about things they enjoy (I had to learn about baseball the year I had die-hard baseball fanatics in my class!) will make doing otherwise "boring" practice fun. For sentences, write out silly sentences on sentence strips. Cut them in half and give one to each student. Then give them a time limit to find a partner, if necessary or wanted! Some students can be comma/conjunctions or semi-colons. They practice which clauses can stand alone and which are dependent. They practice how to connect two simple sentences into a complex sentence. There's a board game that requires you to end the beginning of a "wise phrase" from another culture. I wish I could remember the name of it. Anyway, we play that. I start the phrase and tell them whether it has to be a simple sentence or a complex sentence. Then they get to finish it. Then we vote on which is the real wise phrase and which is the funniest. I had a bulletin board where students could bring in advertisements or newspaper articles or photos of signs with grammar errors. Then they fixed the error with a marker. Also look up Caught Ya! Grammar with a Giggle. For prepositions, we do Preposition Wiggle and Preposition Puppy. The Wiggle is when I call out a preposition and they act it out. "(Under the desk, beside the window, beneath the chair, etc.) It reinforces the purpose of a preposition. Preposition Puppies are drawings of a puppy acting out a prepositional phrase. Get a copy of Grammar Rock for introducing new concepts. They're only 1-2 minute songs, so you won't take up a lot of time with a "video." That's all I can think of right now. I'm sure I'll have more at some point. Introduce the concept of diagramming as though it were a puzzle or mystery they have to solve, not something boring and tedious that they just have to get throughl. Grammar is fun!
