Your son has always been afraid of monsters and his reaction in this unfinished house is not out of character for him. Since we know it's common for children this young to have difficulty distinguishing b/w real and unreal, is it really out of line for a small person to imagine there are monsters in a dark, dank, bare basement? Even adults have reservations about dark unknown places.
