I took a workshop this summer and learned a great activity to use with synonyms. Put a group of 5 or 6 on cards and ask the children to rank them from least intense to most intense, e.g. upset... angry... irate, etc. It helps them to see that synonyms have weight and to more acurately choose a word to express their thoughts. They can help with producing the words, or you can give the words to them to get them started.
