So our district just picked up the Rigby Literacy by Design literacy "program." I have been perusing over it the last few days and am wondering about the spelling portion. It seems a bit out of reach for my third graders.

Each list has 20 words: 10 basic words, 4 no excuse words, 4 challenge words and 2 personal words. Well the very second list is these words:
Basic: balloon, belong, dairy, dolphin, finger, fixture, marble, morning, violin, visitor.
No Excuse: her, look, many, mom
    Challenge: double, maintain, photograph, physical
Personal: to be announced per child :)

The basic words are supposed to be related to phonics and word work sessions. Well the word work for the second week is initial consonants and they are throwing in words like fixture???? I get that it has an initial consonant but it seems a bit hard to me.

Is anyone using this or if not, have an opinion based on this sample anyhow? I would like to get other thoughts to get this all straightened out in my mind. :)
