I did it last year, and mine for this year is next Friday. I can't wait! I thought the most fun thing about it last year was giving total control to the kids. The mc's wrote all the "speeches" and introduced each person. Someone worked lights, another music. Groups of kids were on food, decorations, and greeting. They voted on everything from the menu (nerds, popcorn, blue punch) to the decorations. They ran the entire thing themselves!
One thing that I found that works for the little guys is having them out of the room as the parents arrive. We walked in together and sat down in the front- parents sat around the tables. They could visit with their parents at the end, but I think it saved a lot of time that we just walked in a started, kind of like a show. Length- I had about the same about of poems and it took about 30 minutes, but I'll bet mine were much shorter.
