The school secretaries or principals give meds. Most teachers have band-aids in their desks. Anything more --- kids call parents. Regarding emergencies - if not critical, they call their parents. If it is critical, we call the ambulance. The principal is quite up front with the parents at the beginning of the year - we MUST have current phone numbers throughout the entire year, for if we cannot get a hold of a parent, it could mean an ambulance bill for the parents. For the little guys (K-4), the school nurse or counselor (whose office happens to be in the same office area) act as temp checkers, band-aiders, lice checkers, etc. In fact, if I suspect lice in my 6th graders, I send them next door (very close) for the check.
