The principal at my old school asked me to be a department head for grades 6-12, but I had to move for the year it was to begin. I think he said it was about $400 extra per year, which doesn't make much of a difference in a pay check. The younger grades that weren't departmentalized had grade level chairs, and I believe they were given the same compensation.
