    doodle

I doodle whenever I have to sit and listen to someone talk. I don't fidget though. This helps me concentrate (I'm an artist) during the presentation because there are people who whisper and talk to each other during it. These whisperers make it very difficult for me to hear what is being said. So its my way of staying focused. I only doodle on the side of my notes, when I'm not writing notes down. So my pencil is almost always moving. This sounds different than when your kids are doing independent work though. They should be doing that instead of doodling because they probably aren't getting the assignment done. Doodling is different from drawing pictures. Have you seen what it is they are doing? If its pictures then they aren't paying attention because putting a picture on paper takes more thought and concentration than doodling. Try to set up some time for free time for them and all of your class. Sometimes people draw as a way to express themselves. They are better at that than talking or writing. They need some time to release their feelings-and this is a lot safer way than some may do it. I let my students choose during DEAR time at the end of the day. It sure helps to keep down the noise at dismissal time. After recess I have been having a few minutes of rest time to help calm them back down. I think I'll extend this a little more. They will be able to "cool" down with water, (this is what I already do with waterbottles) read or draw. Then when the timer goes off, hopefully they'll all feel a little more ready to focus on Math.
