We're ready for iPods!

I've read posts where some say they couldn't do their workouts without their iPods, or that iPods are great for keeping all their music at hand, etc, etc. After considering such comments, among others, my cousin and I are ready to jump into the world of digital music but we don't have a clue about where to begin. I was considering buying a regular mp3 player, but I heard a radio tech show where the guy said it would be best to get the most widely used tool because that's where you'll find the most resources. So, we are in the market for iPods...our Christmas gifts to ourselves!
What do we need to know about them before buying? I've seen them in the stores but I'm noticing there are lots of different types and GB sizes.
What kind do you own? Is there another model you wish you had?
What about all those other gazillion accessories that are sold for them? We see that their names have 'iPod' in them but we have no idea what function they serve. Are any of them all that useful?
(See? I told you we know NOTHING about them! :cool: )
Oh! One more thing, how do we load our CD music onto them? (I'll probably think of more questions to ask, later ;))
