    Centers

I think that the efficacy of centers depends on what you are trying to get out of them. If you are using centers just to keep kids occupied while you are working with small groups, I believe taht they will not be as successful as you want them to be. There needs to be apurpose for them and an expectation of successful participation. In my class the "centers" are Independent Reading (from a justright book at their independent level,) a Reading Response Journal where they write about what they have read that day (This holds them accountable for their reading time and allows me to assess their comprehension of independent reading.) I also have a "Squiggle Story" center where they write a story that they add to their portfolio. I do have a Take it to Your Seat center with file folder activities that work on various skills. There is some kind of recording sheet for each of these activities so that I can assess their participation. Currently I also have a "Spooky Stories to Tell in the Halls" center with a selection of Halloween themed books for them to read and then several Halloween themed stationeries for them to write a Halloween story and add to the class book.
I hold my kiddos accountable for all of their center work and do not consider it fluff to fill in time while I work with guided reading groups. I agree with previous posters that most kids have difficulty with independent time, and the expectations and procedures must be practiced, practiced, practiced before they can be successful on their own.
