| Dear maryteach,
Your viewpoint cast light where I don't get to see- the middle school. I believe every year the child should have been retained and then gets passed on, the gap gets wider. I use retention sparingly and definitely, consider the child and home life. It is unfair to pass a child on who is incapable of passing the end-of-grade test. NCLB does create new legality issues for us as teachers. If my elementary school fails to prepare this child for what's to come, the parents could come back legally and want to know why more wasn't done. I hate retaining, but once in a while, it seems best for a specific child. I cannot know for sure that this is where this child is headed, but I agree that you can tell a lot the first few weeks of school, like you mentioned. Third grade is getting to be a bit old for retaining, but better than even further down the road...Thank you for your side of the story, maryteach.
