I too have heard all the stories about how difficult the first year of teaching can be and had to carefully consider if I wanted this, especially with a family to care for also. My husband has taught for many years as well so I was aware of the realities of teaching. I waited until my children were in school before I decided to get into it through subbing, just to get a taste of the teaching life in a way that wouldn't obligate me if I realized it wasn't for me. Soon after I was offered a short-term, non-classroom position that let me get in a little deeper and it was then I realized I really wanted to be a classroom teacher. Since I had the summer to prepare, I spent tons of time reading books, going online to research, and asking questions. I think it makes a difference if you spend the time now getting ready because once you start actually teaching it is so difficult to do much more extra reading or research. This website was (and continues to be) a tremendous help in getting ready, both mentally and physically, to teach. I went in with my eyes open and now I am not shocked or surprised by the amount of work. You are smart to be preparing yourself now. No you can't predict what the real experience of teaching every day will be, but you will really benefit from all you are doing now. Good luck!
