Question on your phone calls...Do you let parents know if their child is NOT transitioning in the first few days of school? I was just wondering, because I have a student who has just been horrible the first few weeks of school. I would like to remain positive, but I'm about to pull my hair out!!

Do you tell the parent right away that there seems to be a problem, or do you give it another few weeks? We've been in school for 4 weeks, and he is not improving. I've sent some notes to mom, but she is very protective and makes excuses for him...basically she already has her dragon claws out for me!!!

Good question. What I do is, I call anyway ... because a bad transition would be crying, talking about last year's teacher, refusing to do ANYTHING in the new grade. Is this happening or is this child naughty? If it is the former, it sounds like he is not transitioning well in which case a phone call would be in order to let parent know of your observations and what s/he thinks could be the problem. If it is just naughty behavior, I make the call anyway, and say something like while he is making his transition to the new grade, you are observing it is with resistance - unwillingness to follow through with rules, completion of assignments, etc. You could also mention that home support is key to his school success.
