Is this a required skill to teach? Years ago it was a definite part of our 3rd grade reading program...workbook drill pages etc. Now the only purpose I see to teach it is for use in reading dictionary pronunciations. So I teach it very briefly when we are learning the dictionary pronunciation key. I tell the kids it is the "uh" sound and is spelled many different ways. They are intrigued with the upsidedown e and we look up a word or two in the dictionary. But I personally do not feel it needs much time devoted to it unless it is a significant part of your reading curriculum or on the academic tests you are required to give. We have so much to teach and really need to pick and choose what is the most useful and necessary. If they know where to find it in a dictionary then they have the research skill they need.
