One thing that has always been helpful to me was to have students numbers and those numbers are on the back of each textbook with white address labels (but smaller) and then covered over with wide clear tape. Then when it comes time to collect them, I know who is missing.
Some of my texts I had on desks at open house and some wouldn't fit in their desks so they remained on a rolling cart. I found in 4th I didn't use each textbook each day and their desks were too small to hold everything. It is another thing to occupy their thoughts and hands so I guess consider this when thinking about if you want them handed out before the kids get their. It is also an opportunity for them to help out and get up and stretch their legs.
