    Funny "DEAR" story
    By lvteaching

Before starting my first year of teaching, in fourth grade, my mentor sat down with me and helped me to outline my first week of school. I was brand-new to the school, the state, so a lot of the things they did were new to me. We went through the days of the first week. She would point to the last 20 minute time slot of every day and say "And here is where you will have them read their DEAR books." I thought this was strange, but didn't want to look dumb, so said nothing about it, just went to the library and got out as many books about deer that I could find. Deer had nothing to do with anything we were studying in our curriculum, so finally (before school started, luckily) I asked her why deer books? She laughed and explained Drop Everything and Read. Needless to say, it was my introduction to the world of teaching acronyms and abbreviations.
