I love the Ramona books by Cleary. My third graders couldn't get into them this year. They did like the Wayside School books by Louis Sachar. I would say those are more for upper grades (4-5) though because I had to explain a lot of the humor. My fifth graders loved them two years ago. My students did enjoy Riding Freedom by Pam Munoz Ryan. I really enjoyed that one also.
