Try decorating your classroom using a theme. For example, my fifth grade classroom is the jungle. So...my bulletin boards are geared to the jungle, leopard print pillows, palm trees, vines with leaves, stuffed animals such as monkeys, etc. In the past I have also had an ocean theme. My cousin teaches sixth grade, and she did a groovy theme. You might check the archives or the bulletin board thread for more ideas. Also, turn one corner of your classroom into a reading center. Get a local carpet store to donate you a large scrap of carpet. Ask them...they might even cut it to the size/shape you need. Buy some comfy pillows and bean bags. Put your books in baskets or colorful bins. I even talked my dad into building me a hut out of bamboo!! Bamagirl25...just curious...in what part of the state do you teach? I'm in the northwest corner.
