Vocabulary Activities By Mariely
Wow! So far, there are some great vocabulary ideas on this post. I hope that other teachers will continue to add their ideas on how they introduce and teach vocabulary in their classrooms.
I also want to contribute by sharing how I have addressed vocabulary instruction in the past. Since everyone has shared something, I want to do the same...this way I may help someone else.
Well, my district has provided us with this great vocabulary resource full of activities you can use to teach vocabulary. It's called the Wild About Words Vocabulary Handbook. If anyone is interested in viewing it or downloading it, please follow this link (please note that it takes a little bit for it to load):

In my previous school we also used this AWESOME vocabulary program created by Isabel Beck and Margaret McKeown authors of the book Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction. The program exposes students to Tier 2 Vocabulary Words orally and they in turn engage in a series of week-long activities using the vocabulary words in various contexts in order to retain them in their mind vocabulary banks. The name of this vocabulary program is called Elements of Reading Vocabulary. This is a scientifically research-based program and it works wonders. It is published by Steck Vaughn and this is the website with some information about it: http://steckvaughn.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/eor_home
The Elements of Reading Vocabulary is pricey ($425.00) for a teacher to purchase on their own but I'm sure that if you know your school administration well and can make suggestions on curriculum, you can use the research-based information on the program to probably have your school consider purchasing the kits. Here are some links with reports on this program:
