The quote above my desk in the above post is just one I like, didn't really put it up to go with the theme. All of the pics were taken before students started, so the word wall hadn't been started yet. I arranged my desks in 3 groups, and I like how they were open in the middle, because I could walk into the middle of that group and be able to check and see how everyone was doing. Each group was a tribe and they came up with their own names and made totem poles out of empty carpet rolls to represent who they were. I reserved the right to move tribe members incase I had any conflicts or behavior issues between students. I had an immunity necklace for turning in all homework for the week. All students who turned in all of their homework had their name put in a hat,and on friday I drew a name. The student drawn got to wear the necklace for the day and was given 2 homework pass coupons to use whenever they'd like. I used color cards for behavior, but I do it on a clipboard. The clipboard (you can see it on the ledge of my whiteboard) is diveded into a green section, blue, yellow, and red. At the end of each day tribes earned points for each student in their tribe that was still on green. I didn't take points away, but I guess you could for students not on green. Points were redeemed on Fridays for a treasure chest item and free time. I gave points for other things too (100% on tests, act of kindness, whole tribe on task, etc....) this was just one way the tribe could earn points. I had a small tiki torch that was handheld and that was our "talking torch" When having large or small group discussions, only the person with the torch could talk. All students had a 2" 3ring binder called their "Survival Binder" In it they kept important infor, stuff to take home to parents, graded work, work in progress, etc... Sometimes I would give a somewhat challenging extra credit assignment, or a challenging math problem. This was our immunity challenge. The tribe who turned in the correct answer first, withan explanation of how they found their answers could choose one assignment in that subject to be immune from and that group could have free reading time outside while the rest of the class did the assignment. Hope this helps, I really had fun with this theme, as did my students. Let me know if I can help anymore!
