I haven't looked through this site much but it gave me an idea of some series books I wanted to stock my library with.

You can sort by grade level.
Since the parent is just trying to get book ideas, she'll probably be able to navigate that site pretty easily.

Here is a website you may want to use. They have loads of downloadable activities for kids in phonics and phonological awareness. Each section has so many activities. I hope this helps.

Download: Chart.doc (123 KB)

This is one that I created and have used for a variety of different things. I printed it on different colored card stock and put them in a three ringed binder. I did this in word and copied and pasted students names in the chart as need be. I could also change the order as students added or dropped. I even left it on my computer later in the year and set up codes for absences instead of my different color coded highlighting system for late, absent, or other. I hope this helps.

Download: book bin labels 3.doc (439 KB)

I am attaching one of mine. I just printed small labels with a picture of the main character and put one on every book in that category, so that the students knew how to put them up where they go. Then, I printed one large pic to put on the basket they go in. I just searched the net to find the pictures I wanted. I have about 15 categories and found pics for all of them.

I think

there is nothing wrong with them reading. They should respond to the books more than just an AR test though. They should fill out a book report on each book and do an involved illustration. Perhaps write their own short book to mimic that book's plot with new characters and a different ending. I think a response notebook to their reading is the key.

I had a teacher colleague that had her advanced first graders do research reports on all the 50 states. This is great as it is material they will be exposed to later, an excellent introduction and interesting to the kids too!

I teach first grade and attached is the book report form I use.
