I am sure my school observes Groundhog Day, but not as a whole school activity. We each do some type of activity in our own classrooms. Here are things I have done in the past: --www.enchantedlearning.com has some great activities. You have to be a member or your school district has to be a member in order to download them. The ones I like are "Groundhog Venn Diagrams #1 and #2," "Groundhog Day Analogies.", and "Fractions of Groundhogs." If you just click on "Groundhog Day," you can get to any of these. --I also like to read or have these books available for students to enjoy: Groundhog Day (Gibbons) The Groundhog Day Book of Facts and Fun (Old and Billin-Frye) Groundhog Day (Yoder) Geoffrey Groundhog Predicts the Weather (Kodcielniak) Go to Sleep, Groundhog! (Cox) ...
My kids make a puppet of a groundhog. Then, they write a short speech that he will say when he is plucked from the ground on Groundhog Day. They are hysterical. Fourth graders have quite a sense of humor and many of our groundhogs have "attitude" about being pulled out of a warm and cozy bed in the middle of winter!! It is so funny when they put that puppet on their hand and read their speech in their groundhog voice. I can't wait to do this again this year.
