| I have students bring in a picture of themselves doing something (at a party, at home, fishing, etc.). Using that as their inspiration, they write what all took place during that event remembering to use lots of details. They like being able to look at the picture, because it brings back memories about that event. | |

Personal Narratives

Two Ideas
1) 3 Favorite Things in a Bag- Provide each child with a brown paper lunch bag. Tell them to put 3 things of their favorite things inside. (Nonbreakable and must fit) They write about themselves with the three items as a guide for a good 5 paragraph narrative essay. Model first and they learn about you.
2) In class have the students draw a birdseye view of their house and yard without the roof so that you can see inside. Ask them to be as detailed as they can, but give them a time limit. This is the basis of your MANY personal narratives. The house holds their memories and LOTS of stories.

I have a song, taught to me by an 8th grade English teacher for remembering the "state of being" verbs. It goes to the tune of "Camptown Ladies."
Am, is, are, was, were, be, been, being, being,
Am, is, are, was, were, be, been, Oh! Being verbs.
I don't think has, have, had are state of being verbs. They can be used as helping verbs. I have carrots. (action) He has been a carpenter. (helping)

It is important for student to learn linking verbs. I teach 6th grade and at this age level our standards expect kids to know predicate nominatives (Mr. Smith was our principal.) and predicate adjectives (Susie is beautiful.). Both of these can be recognized because the...

| I have my kids color in a Christmas picture then write specific step by step directions for someone else to follow to color the picture exactly like theirs. They can't ask each other to clarify anything and they can't see the other person's picture until the end. It is a great way to show the importance of giving and following clear directions. just to make it fun, we have a contest to see who gave and followed the best directions. It really is fun! | |
