math lesson
By Lillie

Clip to ScrapBook
One lesson I've done in the past is using popsicle sticksrubber bands, an overhead and a bell. I start with the overhead on and each time I ring the bell (I use the kind you tap for service at a store) I lay down one popsicle
stick. The students do it with me. I ring and they lay down a stick, then check the overhead. When we get to groups of 10, we bundle them with a rubber band. When I feel most of them are being successful I turn the overhead off for a few times, then turn it back on for them to check themselves. I also write the number underneath each group of ones or tens on the overhead so the students
can actually "see" what 12 is...1 group of ten and 2 ones. (I've also used construction paper for this project...1/2 side one color, the other 1/2 another to help the students more.)
Hope this is clear and that it helps.
