Parents doing projects By Bonnie gr 2

I currently teach second but I taught third for 5 years. For regular homework, I don't mind if parents help but, unless an arrangement has been made, the work should be in the child's own writing. I have had a couple of| children where the act of writing was an issue, so those children were allowed to write part and dictate part of an assignment. for projects, i remind the children that parents may help but most of the work should be theirs. If there is a hard word used in a report, the student should be able to explain what it means. (One boy was able to explain what "straddled" meant in a report on |
| a constellation.) I don't grade projects done at home in a lower grade because so much is done by the parents. My principal feels that it isn't a problem if a parents helps since it may mean that parent and child are working together. It may also mean that the child is asleep and mom or dad is working! When my own children were younger, they always did their science fair projects with little help (cutting the soda bottle for a terrarium). Their projects were not terribly exciting and didn't have crowds of people looking at them at the fair. However, my kids had the satisfaction of doing something themselves and hopefully learned something, too.
