My other student with autism is also non-verbal. He doesn't recognize picture cards, either, but we are doing some programs with him to try and teach him. The only thing he did when he came to my classroom was bounce a ball. Now he can sit in his seat and work with a teacher for 30 minutes on a good day! The steps are small, but we celebrate the little things in my classroom. You DO need more help it sounds like. It just happened to work in my situation this year that I'm able to assign paraprofessionals to each of my students so they get one-on-one time. It has helped tremendously. Do you have any assistance at all in your room? Gosh. It would be nice to talk to others about their curriculum as well as other behaviors. Are messages read here daily or is there another, more convenient and quicker way to talk to other teachers? Thanks & hope to talk to someone soon!!
