I was reading about what Michelle was saying regarding using an FBA to identify her students with low cognitive abilities. I have two students with autism in my classroom and soooo many questions. This is my first time
on this message board. I'm excited already to see other's are experiencing the same difficulties and may have some similar questions.
I use an FBA with one of my students that is extremely abusive to himself and others. We did a motivational survey on him as well (to see why he might be acting out). With this info, I hope to get some help from an autism resource center here on my

next steps. I honestly don't know what to do, but I know we need to do something. This little guy is only 7 - I can't imagine what he'd be like at 17 with his behaviors.

My other student with autism is also non-verbal. He doesn't recognize picture cards, either, but we are doing some programs with him to try and teach him. The only thing he did when he came to my classroom was bounce a ball. Now he can sit in his seat and work with a teacher for 30 minutes on a good day! The steps are small, but we celebrate the little things in my classroom.

You DO need more help it sounds like. It just happened to work in my situation this year that I'm able to assign paraprofessionals to each of my students so they get one-on-one time. It has helped tremendously. Do you have any assistance at all in your room?

Gosh. It would be nice to talk to others about their curriculum as well as other behaviors. Are messages read here daily or is there another, more convenient and quicker way to talk to other teachers?
