magtx - The big push seems to be the use of manipulatives and creating discovery situations for the children. In math, you might give each child (or group) ten blocks and as them to show as many ways as they could of grouping
the blocks. (shows the facts for tens) Have them draw those blocks on a sheet as they find them - then after the blocks are put away - they would then write the numbers under the blocks and count them ie 4 blocks and 6 blocks = 10
3 blocks and 7 blocks = 10, etc. Be sure and bring it altogether by asking them what they found out about the groups of blocks (they all equaled 10)
I'm not sure I'm making myself clear on this - but it shows concrete to analytical thinking

Science - Give groups a large group of items and ask them to put them into three groups and give the "rules of the group" ie - all have stripes, all are round, all have four sides, etc.
