standards must be meet
By I would

Clip to ScrapBook
While you can sympathize with his home situation you cannot let it be an excuse for lack of work or incomplete work. All students need to be held to the same standards.

However, you can allow him to make up missing work
for credit. You can offer him attend before and/or after school periods to do this. You can have him work during any recesses that you have.

If you do any of this for him, you have to do it also for any other failing student in your class.
You feel for this student because you know so much about his background. Other students may also have difficult backgrounds that you do not know

about.

If he fails to take advantage of your offer, give him the grade he earns as you would any other student. To do anything else is unfair to him and to the other students who actually do all the work.
