Establish yourself as the teacher on the first day. The kids will try to say,"Ms. So-and-So doesn't do it that way" or Ms. So-and-So used to let us do _______". Let the kids know that this is now your classroom, and you may do things different from their previous teacher. Teach your expectations and procedures. Empathize with them -- let them know that you know it's hard to have a new teacher, but that you will try to make it easier on them by letting them know exactly what you expect. Good luck.
