I actually don't find it hard to believe. I am a second year teacher in New York and was never taught how to use a grading book - I figured it out for myself. Nobody showed us how to fill out report cards either - my school uses a rubric system and I was left to figure that out for myself too. I also had trouble getting textbooks. Parents were complaining that we didn't have math books for the first three weeks of school last year. I also provided my own supplies and supplemental materials - my classroom didn't even have a map or a globe. I spent hundreds of dollars on supplies and books. Thank God Office Max has a teacher's perks program.
